Your first stop will be Palazzo Medici—designed
by Michelozzo and home to Florence's most powerful family—representing one of the first real
examples of a Renaissance mansion. Just around the corner is San Lorenzo church and Medici
Chapels. Leo X Medici conceived this self-glorifying monument for his dynasty—particularly his
father Lorenzo il Magnifico—and commissioned Michelangelo for its design and sculpting of tombs. Continue to Casa Buonarroti—one of several homes owned by Michelangelo—where he
lived for ten years. It now houses an institute for study and research on his works as well as family
archives. The permanent exhibition showcases marble statues and a wooden model of San
Lorenzo church.
