Here’s another city that proves it can be a “metropolis” while remaining compact. The city’s landmark, the Jet d’Eau fountain, reminds us of this with its water jet reaching up to 140 meters, visible from every corner of the city. Dominating Lake Geneva, Geneva is a long sequence of lakeside and park strolls (there arecountless!). The most modern buildings are on the left bank, while the historic center rises on the right, with Place du Bourg-de-Four standing as the city’s oldest square and Grand Rue attracting history and philosophy enthusiasts with the birthplace of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, one of Switzerland’s most famous philosophers, writers, educators, and musicians. Here, emotions come in two forms: through museums, the Grand Théâtre, and the Opera House, andatop Mont Salève, on the French border. Thanks to cable cars, it ispossible to reach 1,100 meters in under five minutes and take in views stretching from Geneva and the lake to the Alps, the Jura Massif, and the imposing Mont Blanc.
