Today’s tour begins with a visit to Altamura, renowned for its artisanal bread, particularly focaccia.
Tour a bakery with an ancient wood-fired oven and sample freshly baked bread. From here, travel to nearby Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage city famous for its ancient cave dwellings, known as ‘sassi.’ Once one of Italy's poorest regions, Matera was immortalized by Carlo Levi in his book Christ Stopped in Eboli, which brought attention to the city’s plight. Since being designated a World Heritage Site in 1993, many of the ‘sassi’ have been restored and transformed into hotels, guesthouses, and craft workshops.
